Located at 910 McBride, this project expanded family living space comfortably and sustainably. With a growing family, the owners of this Dutch Colonial saw opportunity in the unfinished space above the garage. We added two small dormers creating two large sunny bedrooms and an open study/play area for the kids. The family room was expanded slightly to incorporate a new gas fireplace and custom cherry cabinetry. Practical Green Remodeling & Efficiency Improvements

  1. Include a Home Performance Evaluation in the design phase.
  2. Use Marmoleum sheet flooring or other natural types of flooring in place of vinyl sheet flooring.
  3. Purchase a toilet with the WaterSense logo (1.28 gal flush or Dual Flush).
  4. Treat code requirements for insulation in the design of your project as a bare minimum requirement.
  5. Purchase cabinets, countertops, doors, shelving, and adhesives without added formaldehyde.
  6. When finishing an old basement, address moisture management detailing first and foremost.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT EPA’S NEW LEAD RENOVATOR RULES:

Under new federal guidelines effective April 22, 2010, contractors working on houses built before 1978 will be required to be certified as a Lead Safe Company. Each project will be required to have one crew leader on site who has completed training and received certification. TDS has seven certified employees currently on staff.
